Your First Taekwondo Tournament: A Planning Checklist
Questions about divisions, coach registration, equipment, travel, and expectations before entering a first taekwondo competition.

A first tournament involves more than practicing a technique. Students and families need to understand the event's registration, divisions, equipment requirements, and day-of schedule. Start with the coach and the specific organizer rather than assuming every taekwondo tournament works the same way.
Confirm the appropriate event and division
Ask whether the event fits the student's experience and which division applies. Age, rank, and discipline can affect registration; use the organizer's current instructions. Do not enter a division based only on a friend's choice.
MOD's competition team is an invitation-based program at Harrisville. Interest in a tournament does not establish team eligibility, so discuss participation with the instructors.
Separate competitor and coach registration
The MOD Events page provides separate competitor and coach links for the M.O.D. TAEKWONDO Open Championship, scheduled for December 19, 2026 at West Field High School. Use the link for the role you are registering and read the external organizer's requirements before submitting.
Do not assume that one registration covers both roles or that a listed event date tells you a particular division's check-in time.
Build the practical checklist
Ask about required equipment, uniform specifications, check-in, event schedule, and what to bring. Confirm transportation and allow for the organizer's actual arrival instructions. For rules, follow the event's own material; USA Taekwondo's rules do not automatically govern every independent tournament.
Set a learning goal
Following instructions, understanding the competition process, and responding calmly to feedback are useful goals for a first event. No class, coaching session, or checklist can guarantee a medal.
Review the MOD Events page for the registration links and ask the team about appropriate preparation. If you are starting from scratch, begin with a free trial before planning competition.
